Santa Fe, NM —Today, Co-Chairs Senator Crystal Brantley and Representative Nicole Chavez of the Juvenile Justice Legislative Task Force sent a letter to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham requesting the consideration of meaningful juvenile justice reform legislation, based on the findings and recommendations of the task force, heading into the 2026 Regular Session. Next year’s 30-day budget session requires a specific message from the Governor should potential legislation not specifically address state finances.
The contents found in the report are a result of last week’s Juvenile Justice Legislative Task Force hosted in Las Cruces, NM. Highlights of these legislative recommendations include:
- Strengthen Accountability Measures for Violent Juveniles
- Expand System Capacity and Access to Services
- Implement Data Transparency and Early Warning Systems
- Strengthen Prevention and Early Intervention Programs
- Strengthen Competency Evaluation System
Republicans will introduce these legislative proposals during the 2026 legislative session and call on the Governor to authorize their consideration because, if enacted, each measure would significantly contribute to the improvement of public safety throughout New Mexico.
