Republican Lawmakers Request that Governor Authorize Consideration of Meaningful Public Safety Legislation During 2026 Legislative Session, Issue Task Force Report

Santa Fe, NM —Today, Co-Chairs Senator Crystal Brantley and Representative Andrea Reeb of the Public Safety Legislative Task Force sent a letter to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham requesting the consideration of meaningful public safety legislation, based on the findings and recommendations of the task force, heading into the 2026 Regular Session. Next year’s 30-day budget session requires a specific message from the Governor should potential legislation not specifically address state finances.

The contents found in the report are a result of last week’s Public Safety Legislative Task Force hosted in Albuquerque, NM. Highlights of these legislative recommendations include:

  • Improve Judicial Accountability
  • Enforce Accountability in Homelessness and Behavioral Health Spending
  • Protect Law-Abiding Citizens and Restore Public Order
  • Align Sentencing and Supervision with Public Safety Goals
  • Empower Local Governments and Law Enforcement

Republicans will introduce these legislative proposals during the 2026 legislative session and call on the Governor to authorize their consideration because, if enacted, each measure would significantly contribute to the improvement of public safety throughout New Mexico.
