Senator Ant Thornton Opposes Senator Heinrich’s Politically-Motivated Attempt to Kill NM Jobs

Torrance County, NM — Recently, Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) publicized a letter sent to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in an attempt to shut down the Torrance County Detention Facility. Citing a recent contractual lapse, Senator Heinrich fails to account for the–now concluded– federal government shutdown he repeatedly voted to prolong. This facility positively contributes to the local economy and provides a significant amount of New Mexico jobs to the County.

In response to Senator Heinrich’s political stunt, Senator Ant Thornton (R-Sandia Park) has issued the following statement:

“Senator Martin Heinrich continues to prove to New Mexicans that their needs are clearly below the needs of the party he serves.” Senator Thornton continued, “First, Senator Heinrich actively jeopardized thousands of New Mexico federal jobs and food benefits for over 460,000 New Mexicans. Now, he has decided to target a facility in an attempt to halt operations and effectively kill over a hundred stable New Mexico jobs here in Torrance County. Instead of playing party politics, I urge Senator Heinrich to begin serving the people of New Mexico he was elected to represent.”
